The most critical need and it is critical – is every $50 we can receive for changing the blindness crisis of aged Tribal women and men. For literally thousands of blind aged, New Hope in Muniguda is their only hope The Tribal communities still live as an extended family. The aged have a responsibility to ‘baby sit’ during the day and some even walk with the 9 to 12 years old while they take goats grazing. A senior, both male and female are responsible to bring in firewood for cooking. The adults collect firewood to sell.) The whole situation changes when the aged become blind and go from being a ‘help to a hindrance’ – a social and economical burden.
EQUALLY ON OUR PRIORITY LIST IS TO ASK MORE PEOPLE, MORE FRIENDS TO COMMIT TO SPONSORSHIP OF A HIV AIDS AFFECTED PERSON. I say person because it’s usually an orphan child and sadly widowed HIV+ women with their HIV+ children. Leprosy is an insidiously cruel disease that robs people of the sense and feeling in hands and feet. They walk and get blisters while begging. It gets infected and the injuries become horrendous. (Women burn their fingers while lifting hot pots of the firewood stoves they use). When ever we distribute Bundles of Love we include these ‘tailor’ made sandals. Special micro-cell rubber glued to used care tyres! – Great tread. And soft leather belting with Velcro straps. This is what I tell thousands of people – New Hope never says no to just $5 – it all has a purpose with the people we reach out to through your support.” Give a pair of Sandals for $7.50
Back to Top >> ============================================================== HELPING THE BLIND | SPONSOR CATARACT SURGERY Rural Tribals live as an extended family and the aged have a vital link in supervising children while the parents are in the jungle collecting or working in fields. The aged graze small animals with older children and help collect firewood for cooking. When they are blinded by cataract, the aged become an economical burden and are socially often ostracized. New Hope is the only Non Government Organisation offering free eye surgery for these poverty line aged persons. (The Government of Orissa recognizes the New Hope Hospital for its Eye Project). “Every Australian visitor is amazed at the high standard of the New Hope Hospital, the care for the visually disabled by cataract. It’s a real care project with the aged being offered a bus trip to the hospital and return home – and in the $50 is included is a quality bedsheet, eye medications, and soap. We are amazed that 20 people are collected from one village area and come as a group. Its very economical for New Hope – All for $1,000.

The global economy crisis has been merciless to millions and every Australian knows that, Imagine what unemployment means in India where there are no social services and the medical care system still has many loopholes.
You can see why offering these aged blind Tribal poverty line people is our urgent priority. It is a part of a holistic development strategy to ensure the community is kept strong and self sustainable.
(For many years LEPRA, UK funded the corrective surgery for young deformed leprosy affected, cured people.) Now that Leprosy is curable, it is important to rectify as many deformities as possible for these people to be accepted back into family and society. We targeted young women. Then with a strange change of policy in Orissa this funding stopped. Recently the Government of Orissa, Ministry of Health has asked us to take up this surgery again. Corrective surgery of the hands and feet of young people deformed by leprosy is essential for their acceptance into society, for vocational training to make their lives self supporting, and for them to be socially accepted in society. The Government offers Rs5,000 per operation. We’ re asking them for a ‘food allowance’ of Rs2,000 BUT that still leaves us short of A$300 per surgery if we perform 12 surgeries in two days with a visiting surgeon. (After many years of debate with the Government Medical Officers that now, while the leprosy patient is in the Hospital, their family will receive a food allowance. This means that there is less stress on everyone.)
INDIA HAS PROGRESSED INCREDIBLY SINCE THE TIME OF INDEPENDENCE. THE WHOLE STORY OF THE FREEDOM OF INDIA IS MAHATMA GANDHI – and the same man was deeply concerned with the care of leprosy affected persons – just as we are – in New Hope – in India and in Australia.
$12 Feeds an aged woman and her family for 1 month – this is survival sustenance for many Tribals and most aged people in a leprosy colony.
