ALL DONATIONS ARE NOW TAX DEDUCTABLE IN AUSTRALIA
BECAUSE OF YOUR KINDNESS - they can see again.
All over the world there is an inbuilt sympathy for the blind and the deaf – Not to see those you love and to hear the sounds of life is a hard situation to live in.
When you are poor and live in a country like India where there is no real easy accessible health services being blind is a serious social and economical situation to be in. Imagine being a disabled leprosy patient, blinded by the disease or an aged rural poverty line Tribal where your contribution to the family daily life pattern is essential. The aged blind leprosy patients find it almost impossible and very dangerous to venture out onto busy chaotic Indian roads to beg. The rural Tribal blind aged can not collect firewood, mind children while parents are out in the forest collecting or harvesting food on a day to day – hand to mouth situation. It is impossible for aged [persons and poverty line families to imagine ever saving Indian Rupee 2,000 – Your gift makes it free and gives them that chance to have their vision restored.
YOU CHANGE THAT WHOLE SCENARIO WITH A $50 DONATION SUPPORT
New Hope in Australia has been encouraged by the many small groups and social service clubs that have raised $1,000 and made it possible for a group of 20 people to have their vision restored with the implant lens cataract surgery operation. In December 2011 Eliazar the Indian Director sent an email - “from two villages in the hills we operated on 32 aged persons. We collected them in our ambulance and took them home and gave them a ‘care package that included eye ointment for one week, a bedsheet, soap, and a bag of rice and legumes for a month. “
“Every Australian visitor is amazed at the high standard of the New Hope Hospital, the care for the visually disabled by cataract. It’s a real care project with the aged being offered a bus trip to the hospital and return home – and in the $50 is included is a quality bedsheet, eye medications, and soap. We are amazed that 20 people are collected from one village area and come as a group. Its very economical for New Hope – All for $1,000.
| I call this picture ‘sitting and waiting’ not just the man in the foreground who is actually waiting to take 5 senior women from his village home on a bus and then a short walk across a hill. They whole of the front veranda of the Hospital has men and women waiting for admission. |

This is what makes New Hope for me, and I have been there many times over the last 20 odd years. The simple things that are done for people – a cup of tea for an elderly person who may not have been able to afford such a luxury for years of survival in a forest poverty line community. |

A LOVE BUNDLE – gift beyond imagination
IF YOU LOVE SOMEONE – GIVE THEM A GIFT THAT REPRESENTS A LOVE BEYOND MOST PEOPLES IMAGINATION – GIVE A LOVE BUNDLE.
When you pay, we send a card to the person you give too – and you are most welcome to give it to yourself. OR if you prefer will send the card by Email.
What is a Love Bundle?
This is what you gave with every $20 Gift Bundle of Love
Each of Love Bundle gives elderly Leprosy Patient, a new LONG and WIDE HANDLE COMB – which in itself is a great gift to a persons with severe hand deformities that most cured leprosy aged persons have.

Sandals, sari, bath towel, soap, coconut oil, scented powder, hair clips and sweets. Bundles of Love are really more than presents or a gift, they contain practical needed items.
A pair of sandals, Velcro tape straps, inserts made from soft flexible rubber. The soles are tough recycled car tyre rubber. Each is made to fit the foot as almost all the aged have a serious foot deformity. The sandal prevents ulcers caused through the now curable disease.
For the women, a colourful bright Indian sari, which they swap with other women to get the colour that suits them. The men are just as enthusiastic to get a new ‘western shirt’ and traditional loongi. A cotton bath towel is a must too.
Eliazar and I call this “The connection photo’ – In the centre an aged, widowed leprosy cured living in a leprosy colony recipient of a gift of a Love Bundle from a person in Australia.

Eliazar who remains dedicated to the care of ‘people in need, and never forgetting our roots in leprosy. Myself – always humbled by the honour of being a link between us in Australia when I can be in India when they distribute the gifts – Maggie sister.

SELF SUFFICIENCY – the long term goal of NEW HOPE INDIA
To be self sufficient, to be ‘green’ – to be holistic – is not a theory for us but slowly it is becoming a reality.
We have a vegetable garden almost established to the point of self sufficiency. We don’t always grow what is ‘in season’ as they are usually cheaper to buy in the local market. We grow vegetable that can be processed for added on value – such as chili. Long red and hot!
There are cows, but we would like support to increase the herd size and have a surplus of milk in some seasons to sell to cover the cost of labour. The cows are often managed by the senior boys and also with the help of the HIV+ widows who stay with in our Community.

Sometimes I have to ask Eliazar twice ‘Does it cost that much in India?” We sometimes think of everything as cheap. A cow that has a good milk yield cost $500 average. That’s why so few can afford such a animal that would in truth change the quality of their life through the extra income.

SELF SUFFICIENCY – Chaff Cutter
In Muniguda, where the cows milk is given to the disabled and challenged children, aged leprosy cared for persons and the cataract eye surgery patients there is a need for a better CHAFF CUTTER. A second one in the Kothavalasa Community Centre would save the children time and ensure better silage for the cows too.

SELF SUFFICIENCY – 12 hens ready to lay
A dozen ‘chooks’ for $35 is a pretty good price! Within a year New Hope is aiming to have the poultry project self sufficient.
Most of the kitchen vegetable waste goes through the poultry shed, and that waste then goes to the BioGas unit and eventually back onto the land as fertilizer. In 12 months there maybe surplus dried BioGas digester material to sell as composting.

SELF SUFFICIENCY – Bio Gas - Rotary Hoe - Banana Trees
It’s a ‘nice’ picture, unusually ‘formal’ for New Hope but it tells so much. On the right is a Rotary Hoe (Tiller in India) and for the Garden they need a new one. The present older one will go to Muniguda where it is easier soil to work. The boy standing next to it once lived on a railway station platform with his two sisters and their mentally challenged HIV+ mother. A self explanatory story if you can imagine the worst.

With funds New Hope would like to double the capacity of this trial BioGas that has proven successful and gives 50% of the needed kitchen cooking gas. The senior girls standing with Ruth and Eliazar are part of the Kitchen Team – they volunteer time after school – cutting vegetables, helping and learning to cook. Serving meals and fruit in the diningroom.

The land is ready for a second waste water drain and then Banana tree planting. Making the drain for long term use and recycling the water is important. Like apples are in Australia – The banana is in India – so many types and variety that I don’t ask anymore – they all taste good and I also like the one that is cooked and served as a dry fry vegetable.

PROTECTIVE FOOTWEAR - new sandals
Providing friendship is as important as the services New Hope gives to aged Leprosy affected persons living in hutment slums. .Ruth (Trust Secretary) is usually at every colony when it is time to distribute Love Bundles. Eliazar makes regular visits to the leprosy colonies supported by New Hope in Australia. He works with the Paramedics on ulcer care and with the Shoe Technician (Cobbler) to ensure all sandals made to fit the deformed feet are correct. The Cobbler in the blue shirt is Bhakti – who came to New Hope, Nameste House, Muniguda as a Polio crippled boy, grew up with us and trained as a Technician.

CARING AND SHARING - example of Mahatma Gandi
Called the Father of the Nation – The modern leader of freedom through non violence (An eye for an eye only leads to a nation of blind people) – showed the world that caring on a one to one basis was a sign of truly caring.
The financial situation across the world is not a new phenomena to many aged persons. For $12 a month (40 cents a day) an aged woman in a leprosy colony or a rural poverty line village can eat and stay well.
