SPONSORSHIP OF CHILDREN AND ELDERLY LEPROSY PATIENTS.

Over the last two years people have really changed children’s lives through taking on Child Sponsorship. Some have only been able to commit for one year, and that one year is valuable to us and to the child. The first two years of managing the new sponsorship programme has been interesting. The children’s involvement has been to do drawings to send with the updated new photographs of them the Indian staff take to send 6 monthly updates to their sponsor families. The administration of the programme has been challenging and we have had a couple of glitches and apologize for a few ‘mishaps’. It’s all part of running a small organization with the lowest possible expense. A few people have asked ‘what happens to the children if I have to stop sponsoring?’ With good management in India they now have funds to cover 3 children for 6 months. That gives us time to re-sponsor the child.

Elderly patients in Leprosy Colonies wish and want to stop begging. Many are too old to go on begging, many are so deformed that continued begging only adds to their deformity. In addition to all of these 'medical reasons' - there is a shameful reality that they simply don’t wish to beg. ELDERLY ORPHANS

With the crises of both the Tsunami and the onset of HIV/AIDS many elderly are coming to New Hope in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. They are alone, frail and malnourished from trying to beg, mostly in areas where there is little money. In all cases they are so sad, and yet wanting to maintain their dignity.
We are stretching our money as much as we can, but if you could sponsor and elderly patient, it will help them and us more than we can express. Where possible we have built homes for our elderly close to children’s homes so as interaction and loving kindness goes both ways between children and their new ‘Grandparents. Click Here to Sponsor

HOMELESS CHILDREN
Railway children – in India, abandoned and orphaned children, mainly survive by begging at railway stations. New Hope has 11 emergency homes for railway children. With love and care we offer them opportunities to learn a trade so that they can support themselves.

HIV / AIDS CHILDREN
Having being involved in the New Hope Leprosy trust for 16 years I knew that we would eventually be taking in children with AIDS because we are in isolated areas AIDS was not seen by us until 2000. It was with horror that in June 2001 the staff contacted me in Australia to tell me a child had been dumped outside our office malnourished and ill.
She had a note pinned on her from a well-known charity to tell us that she had HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. We took her in, we did not know her name we think she was approximately 3 years old. She died at the end of that week. Within 2 weeks we had 24 HIV children in our care. We now have 2 hospices for children with HIV/AIDS and another hospice for mothers and children with HIV/AIDS. Building is progressing on more Hospices, for children and Mothers with children. I know that because leprosy is curable our work will become more involved with AIDS patients. Click Here to Sponsor

This is Sreenu, who was our first HIV/AIDS child. He was about 5 years old when found on a Railway station. At first he lived with some elderly patients, who of course adopted him and were sad when he was able to move to the new children’s hospice 4 years ago. Sreenu seemed to be doing well and was spoilt by many of us. Sreenu passed away in 2004, so when I went back to New Hope India in 2005, there was no Sreenu which broke my heart. I went to see the elderly patients and we wept together and prayed for his soul. The comfort is that in his last 3 years on earth, he was loved and cared for by us, he went to school when he was well and loved cricket. To sponsor a child with AIDS is a very special gift to give. Now with new Anti Viral drugs that we give to the children, many will live longer, be educated and learn a vocational trade. To give love and care to children like that comes from your heart and there is a special bond for you always.
