Although New Hope is proud to be an equal opportunity organization we do admit to a special concern for women in need and for children with special needs simply because such children miss out on getting a fair education.
Women HIV+ need special care when they are widowed and socially ostracised. That’s the reality.
At the same time we do have at New Hope in Kottavalsa two senior men who have simply nowhere else to live. One an ex lorry driver became blind and accepted the challenge to stay with us if he changed jobs From lorry driver to washerman (laundry) is a challenge in itself as the Indian caste system makes him low on the ‘pecking order. He now takes care of the clothes for the small boys in the Katagiri Home.

Anusha	Kamala	Kasi
Anusha is HIV+ senior girl who knows and accepts the reality of her situation and lives with it. At the moment they ‘work’ part time in the Hospice. This month for the first time we have been able to find an institution that will accept hem as they are, for training as Multi Health workers. When they graduate they will prized by New Hope as we need a higher standard of health carers in the project, especially in the Hospice. Kasi, our senior boy, 16, is in the same age group and health situation. Kasi has succeeded in Junior college and now wants to go on to Senior college. We offered him a less challenging career, but he really wishes to study and we wish all of our students who are in any way challenged, to– as you say in Australia - " have a go”.
Babu	Narendra	Pavani
Babu is a polio disabled young man now 17. He came to us 5 years ago. He completed his 10th class and now wishes to go into Kottavalsa town to study at the Junior College. Babu has a part time job as the resident Art Teacher for a group selected group of budding ‘artists ’	Narendra, who is mentally challenged with Cerebral Palsy , wishes to go with Babu.He currently earns his pocket money doing what amazes us, operating the sandal making dye machine with the help of one other senior.	Pavani has been with us for 6 years. She is an orphan girl with a sole surviving grandmother who lived at such poverty line she could not care for Pavani. We have been able to arrange for her to undergo a Certificate Course for Nursing; called an ANM. It’s a job assured skill training. She has agreed to give two year help to our Hospice when she graduates.

New Hope started work in a remote tribal area in western Orissa, India. New Hope is now providing essential medical care and rehabilitation services to thousands of leprosy patients, disabled and homeless children in two states.

New Hope works towards eradicating Leprosy in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Other projects include aspects of all development including Leprosy, Tribal areas with Education for Nutrition, Immunization, safe delivery kits, Reforestation of Forests and new farming methods in Tribal villages.

There is no single answer to change poverty, we work to change the quality of life of the poor and leprosy patients tackling the whole development problem not just a single issue.

New Hope works towards the eradication of leprosy, which is now curable, through early treatment, rehabilitation and education. The remarkable achievements of the Trust are a credit to the generosity and dedication of committed Indians and support in Australia. It started in 1988, and continues with Maggie sister and a fund raising Association “Friends of New Hope India Relief (Aust) Inc.” Registered with the Australian Government in 1994.

Maggie Nolan (Maggie sister) has spent 17 years supporting and nurturing the New Hope community, through its growth from a small community centre with 10 staff to an organization with over 350 staff.
