How could an emergency centre for Tsunami victims be called Broometime Lodge? It is a mark of respect from the New Hope Rural Leprosy Trust India, to the people of Broome. Here in Broome we are coastal dwellers and so we realized that it could have been us and were generous with our compassion and money donated.

We were able to give immediate help to the survivors of this tragedy. Broometime Lodge was the first building to be finished in the Cuddelore district and over 6000 people came to us for food, water and in a lot of cases looking for loved ones, lost to them during the Tsunami. We also fed approx 500 children a day for 6 months. Because of the devastation in Southern India and the fact that New Hope India has become well known for its response to people in need, Eliazar our Director and some field staff went immediately.

The Broometime Lodge is now a landmark and we still get people coming to us. Six months after the initial emergency, it was decided that it would become a Vocational Centre for widows and girls who are destitute because of the death of male relatives. They are able to choose between Tailoring, Weaving, Screen printing, and non formal education.
The Broometime Lodge is there to stay. It will remain an educational centre for women.

The cost of running this centre is $6000 per annum for wages, repairs and giving the women a meal before they return to their villages. I am serious when I say that without our help these women and young girls would have no other option but to beg and become Prostitutes.

I have lived in Broome with Allan for 5 years now, and my vision is for the Broometime Lodge to be ongoing.
ALL funds raised for the Broometime Lodge are used for this project only and annual reports can be obtained.
